NO! Fans, a “real-life Hunger Games” is NOT okay.
It’s really horribly disturbing to me to post a link to a story about an ad in Seattle for a “real-life Hunger Games” and have responses like, “I’m jealous, I’d be part of that,” and “I’m dying to be a part of that.”
This is SO WRONG.
The ad was in Craigslist, and promised it was “for real.” While I sincerely hope it was just part of a sick joke, the fact that ANYONE would misinterpret this and think it would be worth participating in is truly upsetting.
The ad wants 24 people to voluntarily agree to participate in a fight to the death. To willingly commit murder for entertainment.
SICK. Totally sick and demented. And I just want to make sure readers understand that it is NOT okay to condone or support something like this.
So, no, you should not be bummed out that it’s not happening near you. You should be completely disturbed that something like this could even happen. That’s part of what makes THE HUNGER GAMES books and movies so chilling; the idea that this could be our future. Part of the lesson these stories teach is that it is NOT okay to treat people in this way. That killing is not okay, especially not for entertainment.
Good grief.
I can’t believe I’m having to diatribe about this.
